Do you have the Hobbit movie series?
The Hobbit: Getting Out of Our Comfort Zone

The Hobbit is a series of films directed by Peter Jackson. Based on the novel of the same name, they are part of the universe of Middle-earth. The book was written by Lord of the Rings author JRR Tolkien. Overall, the trilogy is a prequel to the Lord of the Rings trilogy . The Hobbit takes place 60 years before The Lord of the Rings .

The screenplay for the films was written by Fran Walsh, Phillipa Boyens, Peter Jackson and the famous Guillermo del Toro. The Hobbit tells the story of a little hobbit named Bilbo on his adventures through Middle-earth. Bilbo is convinced by a mysterious magician, Gandalf the Gray, to embark on an adventure with 13 dwarves. This dwarf company is headed by Thorin Oakenshield. Thorin seeks to defeat Smaug the dragon and return to Lonely Mountain, the fallen dwarven realm.

The Hobbit , an adventure story

In his book The Hobbit , Tolkien opens up a more innocent fantasy world than the one we see in The Lord of the Rings . Tolkien creates happy little people, the Hobbits, who live their lives in the peaceful Shire. Bilbo Baggins is one of the hobbits who most deeply enjoys the comfort that his everyday life offers him. His whole life is centered on his comfort.

What Bilbo didn’t know was that everything was about to change when a magician knocked on his door. Gandalf is the magician who pushes Bilbo to begin his adventures, just as years later he will push Frodo. Bilbo will discover the 13 dwarves who will accompany him throughout his journey. Weird, but full of liveliness and cunning. When the dwarf leader, Thorin, offers him the journey to reclaim the fallen kingdom of Erebor, Bilbo flatly refuses.

Bilbo is so at home, with his armchair, his pipe and his garden, that he has never thought of leaving it. Finally, he realizes that it would be impossible for him to mature without taking risks. Bilbo knew the trip was worth it because it meant living the adventures he had always read.

Leave the Shire, leave your comfort zone

The Shire, the small village created by Tolkien, illustrates very well what a comfort zone is. Full of beautiful scenery, fertile meadows and friendly hobbits. Everyone in the County is comfortable with their routines, they don’t want changes.

Nothing improvised happens in the life of hobbits. However, Bilbo only needs a little push to dare to leave his comfort zone. Yet that means abandoning your friends, home and the comforts of the Shire to step into the unknown.

In Bilbo’s case, this exit from his comfort zone happened at the right time. But how do we know when is the right time to dare to cross our own barriers? To answer it, we could consider these three points.

1. Is this the right time?

You’ve always dreamed of becoming a singer one day, but you’ve never taken a vocal lesson. You have the opportunity to sing in a show open to the public near your work. What is the best decision? You have to think about your abilities.

While it’s true that we can always learn a little more, it’s even smarter to recognize when we have the basic skills to take on a task. In the case of the musical show, it would be preferable to rehearse a little before starting to sing in front of an audience who will judge our performance.

2. Did you specify your objective?

Having a clear idea of our priorities and goals will help us tackle the challenges we encounter along the way. Challenges are inevitable, what changes is our attitude towards them.

An important point about challenges is to identify the reasons that lead us to face them. This list, along with the reflections associated with it, will help us in difficult times when our motivation is threatened.

3. Are you up for challenges?

Leaving our comfort zone requires an investment of time and effort. Whether it’s public speaking, learning to say ‘no’, or putting on our shoes and walking on paths we’ve never taken. All the challenges we face require courage, effort and attention (remember we are talking about unfamiliar terrain).

How are your strengths? How do you feel emotionally? A good way to find answers to these questions is through reflection. It is only when you know the answers that you can decide whether it is time to leave your comfort zone or, conversely, whether it is better that you try to leave in another way or stay there. , at least for a while. On the other hand, once the decision is made, go ahead, don’t delay it, today better than tomorrow, now better than later.

In Bilbo’s case, all three questions were answered favorably. He had a taste for adventure, wanted to take on challenges and had plenty of time for it. In addition, he had a clear goal: to help the dwarves reclaim their Mountain.
